Matthew Broderick Drives Recklessly: and Kills Two People
Auto accidents can happen to anyone—even huge movie stars. Sometimes, these accidents are merely the result of uncontrollable circumstances. Most auto accidents, however, are the result of negligence. In 1987, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were involved in an auto accident that left two people dead. The circumstances of the crash are unclear, but it’s believed that Broderick was driving recklessly.
Matthew Broderick’s acting career took off in the mid-1980s thanks to hits such as WarGames and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Broderick and Grey started a romantic relationship after appearing together in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and in 1987 they decided to take a break from their careers to travel to Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland, motorists drive on the left side of the road instead of the right.
Broderick and Grey rented a BMW and had plans to drive around the Northern Ireland countryside. The pair set out on a meandering route from Irvinestown to Maguiresbridge, two towns in the western part of Northern Ireland. Broderick was behind the wheel, and allegedly drifted into the right lane, which led to a head-on collision. The occupants of the other vehicle, Anna Gallagher and Margaret Doherty, were killed instantly. Grey suffered whiplash and a few bruises, while Broderick suffered a broken leg and serious cuts.
Matthew Broderick’s negligence behind the wheel was determined to be the cause of the accident. Broderick was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving, which carried a potential sentence of five years in prison. However, Broderick was instead convicted of careless driving, and only had to pay a fine that was the equivalent of about $150.
